I first heard of the low starch diet during the 2011 National Ankylosing Spondylitis Conference in the UK. A gentleman who I believe was Dr. Alan Ebringer, Professor of Immunology at King’s College London, presented a brief description of his years of study on this matter and asked the members of the society to recognise it.
NASS did publish a description of the diet on their website however, they go on to explain that due to the lack of controlled analysis and blind testing invloved in the consumption of a diet over a long period of time it is very hard to produce a definitive result as results have been mixed, some people experience a benefit and others experince nothing.
The principals of the diet are:
Low Starch diet
CUT DOWN ON:
- Bread and bread Products or foods made with wheat, barley, oats, rye and corn flour
- Rice
- Potatoes
INCREASE THE FOLLOWING:
- Meat
- Fish
- Milk and Milk Products
- Eggs
- Vegetables
- Fruits
The diet contains no restrictions on spices or drinks.
